Regardless of whether you're a beginner or an experienced rider, cycling is the best way to make the most of your time on the bike. As you age, it becomes more challenging to get and stay fit, and most individuals over the age of 50 do not cycle, despite their desire to lead an active life. So, how do you keep your passion for cycling alive as you age and make the most of your riding experiences? It's essential to avoid overdoing it and start by cycling for ten to fifteen minutes a day, gradually working your way up to longer ride times. Setting achievable goals like "ride 30 minutes three times next week" will help you build up your exercise gradually and avoid burning out too quickly. My grandfather, Chief Ishiaya Ogwang Guzi, was the first person to ride a bicycle in the entire Lango Subregion of Uganda, and he lived to be over 100 years old. He enjoyed good health and fitness up until his last days. For older individuals, dedicating 70% of their time in a week to simple cycling training is crucial, with an intense focus on achieving good results. There are several key reasons why cycling is an excellent way for older adults to improve their health and fitness: 1. Cardiovascular health: Cycling is an excellent cardiovascular workout that increases blood circulation, strengthens heart muscles, and reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Regular cycling can contribute to maintaining a healthy cardiovascular system, which is crucial for older individuals. 2. Joint strength and mobility: Cycling is a low-impact, arthritic-friendly form of exercise that helps maintain joint mobility without putting excessive stress on the knees and ankles. It also helps in strengthening the leg muscles, promoting overall joint health. 3. Weight management: Keeping a healthy weight becomes more crucial as people age. Cycling is a great way to control your weight and burn calories. It supports general fitness and weight control by assisting in the maintenance of a healthy balance between calorie intake and expenditure. 4. Mental health: Exercise, such as cycling, releases endorphins or "feel-good" hormones, which positively impact mental well-being by reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. Cycling outdoors also provides an opportunity for exposure to nature, further enhancing mental health. 5.
